Joseph P. Kannam, MD
Cardiologist and Internist
Dr. Joe Kannam is a cardiologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
In addition to having a busy cardiology practice, he currently serves as the program director of the cardiovascular fellowship program at BIDMC. Dr. Kannam is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the American Heart Association.
Education and Training
Dr. Kannam graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Biology from Boston University, and received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine.
He did his internal medicine residency and cardiovascular fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston before joining the cardiology staff at Beth Israel Medical Center (BIDMC) in 1995.
Accolades
Dr. Kannam is considered a leading authority on preventive cardiology, coronary artery disease, and valvular heart disease. He won the Patient’s Choice Award and was named one of Boston Magazine’s Top Doctors in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
Volunteer Experience
Dr. Kannam has been quite active with the American Heart Assocation, a volunteer organization with the mission of reducing the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. He is a former president of the Board of Directors of the Boston Chapter of the American Heart Association. He makes frequent trips to Haiti with the organization Hearts Around the World to train local physicians in cardiovascular disease.
Outside the Office
Dr. Kannam grew up in the Boston area and currently lives with his wife in Wellesley. He is an avid runner and skier.
